Whoa, Birthdays!

April is a big month for birthdays apparently! Grayson was invited to 4 of them last weekend and I'm proud to say we made all 4 - ranging from North Richland Hills to Dallas to Farmer's Branch to Frisco.

Here it goes:

Seton's 3rd birthday - CooCoo's
I've mentioned before that we love this place! Seton is in Grayson's play group and he's another one of the "big boys" in the group and his mom, Mandy is one of my favorite people! We enjoyed celebrating him that day and it was fun to see Grayson play the games and really get what was going on. :)

"Smile!"
The very first coordinating brother outfits I bought almost a year ago. So happy to see these 2 boys in them :)
Luke's 3rd Birthday - Paleastra
This place is a few blocks away from where I used to work on the border of Farmer's Branch and Addison - I never knew it existed! It's a huge gym where I imagine kids go to do some serious gymnastics training! Luke is in Grayson's class and they have become so close. He's G's best friend - I mean, he LOVES Luke. It's really cute to see him develop a friendship with someone that I had nothing to do with. They became close all on their own, nap next to each other at school (sometimes accidentally cuddle - hehe) and are so close that they fight like brothers at times. I have loved watching them become close :)

When we arrived (late), Grayson saw Luke across this huge gym and screamed, "DADDY! LUKE IS HERE! C'MON!" And he ran over to Luke - brought tears to my eyes. This is a video of them right after - they followed each other everywhere...

Of course Grayson had to sit right beside him
There were about 10 kids there - Beau ran into a couple that he went to college with. Small world!
Henry's 1st Birthday - North Richland Hills
Henry is the baby of one of Beau's best friends, Justin McAllister. Katie was told she wouldn't be able to have children after the chemotherapy she had several years ago. She is now cancer-free and the Mother to precious, healthy and happy, Baby Henry. They all flew in from California to celebrate his first year with family and friends! We love them and are so happy to see this journey they are on! They took a ton of pictures (Justin is Beau's Nikon/photography partner in crime) but I only have one from our time inside with the Abernathys. Deran, of course, being the third to complete that trio :)
Deran and Eli; Sarah holding Walker. They're about 2 months apart :)
Braxton's 3rd Birthday - Woga Gymnastics
Woga has a fun, smaller area upstairs for birthday parties and younger kids so they all had a great time!  When everyone went in to the cake room, I caught this special moment over by the trampoline ;)
Melt my heart!
Braxton blowing out his candles at the head of the table
Any surprise that there were many car naps over the weekend?!

Kitchen Remodel - Final!

If I ever decide to straighten up my kitchen (not gonna happen), I'll take pictures of the whole thing. BUT, my last kitchen post is pretty much the final look so you get the drift. The final picture to post is this one!

I met Andrea in Waco to pick up my gorgeous window treatments! She had these made for us and they are so well done! I loved seeing her, by the way. :) Beau was so sweet to have the shades hung within a few hours of my returning home and we both love them! They really do pull the two rooms (kitchen and breakfast area) together and give it a finished look.

I'll leave you with this quote from my multi-talented sewing machine-owning husband:

"I'm just going to say it because I can....I could have made those shades."

He's so cute ;)

Grayson Luke - Potty Training Extraordinaire

I'm writing about this milestone (much to my own annoyance) mainly for one reason. To help myself and Beau out when it comes Walker's time and we, no doubt, don't remember a thing! In fact, I'm not considering any of this advice b/c every child is just so different but if you find just one thing in here that helps, great!

We have had incredible success, y'all. Like, I'll even say that this has been easy for us. I say that knowing that accidents and setbacks will happen and that no one can really take credit for any of it. It doesn't make us experts or mean that Grayson is so smart. We just got lucky, I think! But if I had to think of the things that helped us, it would be the points below. We are now on Day 7 (Day 2 at school) of rocking the potty train (see what I did there?).

I'm attributing Grayson's ease of potty training to three factors:

1) His age. I'm so thankful that we didn't cave to opinions on what age anyone thought we should be doing this. Grayson is 2 years, 10 months and I truly don't think he was ready any earlier than this. It worked out well - he's old enough to converse and reason with, to communicate with us, undress and dress himself (for the most part) and to really understand the sense of accomplishment that comes with this. Also, he doesn't really like being dirty, where before this, I can't say he would have cared - ha! :)

2) Incentives. We've all heard of M&M's for each successful potty trip but I took it a step further b/c I KNOW what speaks to Grayson. And it's not stickers or check marks. It's presents. It's toys. It's presents that are toys. And since everyone has told me that #2 is the REALLY challenging part of training, I wanted to be sure to incentivize him. So, $20 for 20 toys at Dollar General later (I had SO much fun with this part!) and I was hopeful that this would appeal to him. Will this work for everyone? No. Just find what speaks the language of your little one. We kept a chart in the bathroom to keep track of his successes. I simply googled and found one with Spiderman on it. Win.

So we did an M&M for each successful "pee pee in the potty" and then a toy for:

1) each successful #2 trip (which are still few and far between :/ )
2) every 5th successful #1 trip
3) every 5th time he pulled down his own pants
4) and each time HE told US that he had to go, not just us constantly asking him if had to go
5) Every 5th time he washes his hands after. Because he needs to know that this goes hand in hand (get it?? I'm on a roll here) with going to the bathroom. And because I'm not trying to have his pee pee hands on my face (he was so excited one time after he went that he put his hands on my face and squeezed my cheeks after he went - I wasn't ready for that!)

I love the idea of the Dollar Store toys b/c as he loses interest, I can throw them away and not feel bad about it. They were still cool enough to be an instant reward. Example: a glow stick - fun for a couple of hours one evening, was burned out and in the trash by morning and he never thought twice about it!

 3) Beau. Having him here and an active part helped so much. I think it helped, not only so that the whole process wasn't testing just one person's patience (we alternated trips to the bathroom - even the countless ones where #2 didn't happen), but because Grayson and his Dad have a special guy bond that I just won't have with him. Grayson looks up to him, tries to impress him, tries to be like him, etc. The usual Father/Son stuff. I would even say that most of Grayson's confidence building, accomplishment-feeling, successes happened with Beau in there, not me. It wouldn't have been the same experience without him. I'm sure this wouldn't apply much at all to potty training girls - just a thought. :)

Status: Three accidents in 7 days, two of those were on Day 1. Not bad, Grayson! Undies during the day, Pull-ups at night although he has awakened (is that right?) dry each nap and morning with the exception of nap on the first day. He calls out to us when he wakes up saying he needs to pee pee in the potty. As I mentioned, I'm sure he may digress some or have a bad night here and there, so we will continue with pull-ups until we all feel comfortable without. I have NO idea how to potty train someone's subconscious (how do adults know not to go at night?). I won't know what to do if he starts wetting at night. So again, we are just lucky so far and hope that he keeps it up!
Who wouldn't want to spend time in this bathroom?! M&M's, extra undies, toy tub, Pull-ups (Not pictured: Lysol wipes, carpet cleaner, hand soap, etc. :) )

There is something about seeing your baby in big boy undies that can put a smile on your face :)
I picked the most beautiful weather weekend this year to stay couped up for 72 hours (sigh) so
he had some fun building random ramps on the back porch. :)
Probably the funniest story through this process was this....a couple of days into the whole thing, Grayson really understood that the result of checked boxes meant he got to pick a toy. We were all in the kitchen when we noticed Gray slowly sneak off with one of his markers. I just KNEW he was going to expedite the process ;) Sure enough we caught him red handed...
Checking off boxes (with a little bit of sass, btw)
So proud of his idea

I never would have noticed ;)
The surprising thing to me through all of this is how hard Grayson has been on himself when he has had an accident. Despite Beau and I telling him that they will happen and that it's okay, he really takes it hard. To be expected, I guess, when he's been so prideful during the good moments. He's such a little man already :)

iPhone Photo Dump - March

A little bit of this; A little bit of that....but mainly, a photo dump from my phone. :)

My friend Shelby surprised me with this! It's in Walker's nursery colors and it's perfect. Thank you so much Shelby!
This adorable baby madras is no more. A casualty of Beau being in charge when I was at a girls' night. He was so sweet to not bother me about how exactly to get it off the baby. So he just cut it. Ha! I'm not kidding.
Those eyes! That drink! We have had plenty of dates thanks to our parents watching the kids.
Speaking of amazing drinks - this martini glass showed up with a ball of cotton candy sitting on top. Then some sort of vodka mixture was poured over it as it dissolved. Pretty cool! Totally recommend Pepper Smash in Shops at Legacy to anyone! We met our friends Nick and Annie there for some adult time. Fun as always!
My boy deep in thought as he was drawing outside one day. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he has some artistic talent there.
St. Patrick's Day down in Dallas with our friends! Beau's sweet Mama drove in for the day to keep the boys!
There is never a shortage of "good ideas" in this group and for that I love them. Who knew this was legal?! I drove these crazy kids to Greenville as Beau and I were off to party #2 at the Parmerlees' house.
Another recommendation: 3 Stacks! Our new favorite BBQ joint. The country music will make you want to go dancing!
We love spending time with Nick, Annie, Cole and Finley! We're all big buds and there's always something going on!

When Finley isn't following our dogs around, she's taking care of the baby (in her old nap nanny!)
After dinner, we always enjoy some rough housing in the living room! Beau and Nick took turns flipping the 3 older kids.
Our little cowboy at Lowe's after church. He is STILL very interested in hoses :)
He has discovered WORMS! Loves watching them slither and is so disappointed when they're dead (as I sigh with relief). :)
I love how Miss Jenny loves our boy.

The Perot Museum & Sid the Science Kid

How fortunate we are to have a museum like this in Dallas! It's brand new and I have heard so many parents rave about it since it's opening. We have really been wanting to check it out and what a perfect time to do it, Sid the Science Kid was there today! My Mom invited us to go and, with her membership, we were able to get in before the general public. Now I'll admit, I was more excited to see Sid than Grayson was. This cartoon comes on in the mornings and is really the only one he gets to watch, which works for me b/c it's the only one I love! I just think Sid is so cute :) He sings the "I love my mom" song, which is pretty much the "Eye of the tiger" to my Rocky Balboa. Ha! Kidding. ;) But when I dance around the house to it, Grayson bursts with laughter so it's special. :)

Grayson loved the dino!
Our little family
A photo opp with Sid? Yes, please!
Grayson couldn't have cared less
I look forward to visiting again when we can see more of the museum. This is a shot Beau got while Grayson wanted to ride the escalator to the 4th floor. The rest of us never ventured up there.

They had a whole room dedicated to the construction of the Museum, which was right up G's alley!
Working on his plans :)
City planning with Mimi
The children's area was so cool!
Everything was so hands on. Perfect for the curious kids like Grayson.
He made a firefly with Daddy. It has an actual glow stick in the body!
We attended a show about how electricity works.
And ate in the Cafe. He was exhausted after that.
If anyone wants to go with us, let me know! We can't wait to go back!
